Buda Castle Opening Hours
The open air courts, courtyards of the Buda Castle are open day and night, 24/7. On special days, when festivals take place on the Buda Castle courts, the courts are fenced off, and you will need to buy a festival entry to be able to get access to the castle and its attractions.
Opening Hours of the Royal Palace
Daily Opening Times:
Monday: the museums inside the Buda Castle Royal Palace are closed. The Castle District is open though and so are sights like the Buda Castle Cave, the Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker, the Matthias Church, Funicular, etc.)
Tuesday: from 10 am to 6 pm (most Castle Hill attractions)
Wednesday: from 10 am to 6 pm (most Castle Hill attractions)
Thursday: from 10 am to 6 pm (most Castle Hill attractions)
Friday: from 10 am to 6 pm (most Castle Hill attractions)
Saturday: from 10 am to 6 pm (most Castle Hill attractions)
Sunday: from 10 am to 6 pm (most Castle Hill attractions)
Holidays: depending on the holiday some attractions are closed while others are open in the Buda Castle District. For example, March 15, August 20, October 23 are national holidays but the major museums are open. Easter and Christmas holidays may differ from sight to sight, and Castle tour to tour. You can read more about Budapest Christmas and New Year Budapest on the festive city guides.
As the festivals are some of the best in Budapest, and well worth the entry fee, you will not be disappointed. Oftentimes the festival ticket includes free entrance to the buildings of the Buda Castle.
Currently the Royal Palace (aka the Buda Castle) is the home of the National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum, therefore, the opening hours of the buildings of the Buda Castle is identical with the opening hours of the Gallery and the Museum (as well as the less known Hungarian National Library, which also often features exhibitions).
- National Gallery (inside Castle): Tue-Sun 10 am – 6 pm (closed on Mondays, but often open on national holidays)
- History Museum (inside Castle): 1 March – 31 October Tuesday – Sunday 10 am – 6 pm, November 1 – February 29 Tuesday – Sunday 10 am – 4 pm (closed on Mondays, but often open on national holidays)
- St Stephen’s Hall Museum (inside Castle): 1 March – 31 October Tuesday – Sunday 10 am – 6 pm, November 1 – February 29 Tuesday – Sunday 10 am – 4 pm (closed on Mondays, but often open on national holidays)
- Buda Castle Cave/ Labyrinth (in Castle District): open all year round, every day (tour subject to availability)
- Fisherman’s Bastion (in Castle District): open all year round, every day. Walking Tour (value) available every day.
- Funicular uphill and downhill the Buda Castle Hill: available all year round (except for odd week maintenance hours on some Mondays). Private Castle Tours with Funicular, Cruise etc. available all year round.
- Matthias Church: open on most days (except for special occasions like weddings, etc.). Matthias Church Tours subject to availability.
- Alexander Presidential Palace: Changing of the Guards – hours seasonally changing, normally on display at weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun)
Opening Hours of the Buda Castle District
Similarly to the Royal Palace, the Buda Castle district itself is open all day and night, at least regarding its streets, courts, and even some of its attractions, like the Fisherman’s Bastion, which is the finest lookout tower (a fairy tale tower complex) in the Buda Castle district. The Buda Castle hilltop, which is called the Buda Castle district makes a nice and romantic Budapest attraction for late night or early dawn walks too.
That being said, most of the castle attractions close at 6 or 8 pm, some of the restaurants and bars stay open until around 11 pm or midnight, and then the castle goes calm and quiet. Indeed, the parties and noisy nightlife of the city of Budapest takes place on the Pest side, while the Buda side, including the Buda Castle district, gets quiet and peaceful.
Hello,
I have a very important question, we’re a group of students from Poland (45 persons), we study tourism and we will organize a bus trip of Europe ( this is a students practice). In Budapest we will be 23th June (only one day) unfortunately, it’s Monday. We’d like to visit Budapest History Museum, is it possible? This is the main point of the program. We care so much about this musuem.
I’m waiting for the reply,
Kind regards,
Natalia Młynarczak
Hello Natalia, unfortunately Monday is the only day when the museums are closed in the Buda Castle, with the exception of the Spy Museum, which is open from Monday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. The Budapest History Museum is closed on Mondays. We are very sorry that you will be staying one day only, and hope that the students can return to Budapest for a longer time to enjoy the many programs and attractions the Hungarian capital can offer. The Hungarian National Gallery (also in the Buda Castle) is closed on Mondays too. Nevertheless, we suggest contacting the Budapest History Museum directly in this matter for an official reply. You can email them at kapcsolat@mail.btm.hu
Thank you for visiting Budapest, Hungary! Have a fabulous time!
Hi Nati, this question is horrible, i can’t answer your question. But i hope you visited the museeum in june 2014. If not – you can also come again… we have the 24th of june 20(17)14 every year… bye and greetings to poland and the group. Peace have fun and enjoy your lazy life
This looks like some hazing ritual for students of tourism – get them to organize a private visit to a nation’s major museum on Monday and tell them it’s the major point of the trip… ;)
Hello there,

Dear Benjamin, thank you for your choir concert inquiry in the Buda Castle district of Budapest. We have sent you a list of contacts and detailed information about potential venues for a beautiful concert in the city. Have a great time in Hungary!

We would like to visit the Buda Castle Easter Festival 2015 so can you please let me know how to buy tickets for this event? Many thanks.
Dear Linda, you can buy the tickets for the 2015 Buda Castle Easter Festival at the Buda Castle. The Buda Castle and its buildings are open during the Easter holidays in 2015. But the admission is special as there is a big Budapest Easter Festival in the courts of the Buda Castle. This means that during the Easter Sunday and Easter Monday (also on Good Friday and Saturday), the museums and galleries are also open. You can visit the Budapest History Museum inside the Buda Castle with the festival ticket (included in the price). The festival tickets are valid for both days (Easter Sunday and Monday).
Ticket Prices in 2015:
HUF 2,000 / adult
HUF 1,000 / child (ages 3-14)
HUF 5,000 / family (2 adults, and max 4 children)
Festival opening hours: 9 am – 8 pm (cashiers close at 6pm).
The Hungarian National Gallery is also open during the Easter holiday (Friday – Monday) in the usual opening times, from 10 am to 5.45 pm.
Hi Could you please clarify the opening times for the Buda Castle and Fishermans Bastion for me please… I am sorry but I find the above information a bit confusing…
Also Is it possible for a couple to have photos taken in the Castle and surrounding the castle such as those lovely stairs and the Fishermans Bastion area…
Could I please also ask, if a couple wanted photos taken when the sun is going down what kind of times would be perfect for these type of photos… i.e. sunset / evening / night appearance.
Thank You So Much
Shusma (UK)
Dear Shusma, the opening times of the Fisherman’s Bastion are open all times (Monday – Sunday, 0 am – midnight). The Bastion is never closed as it is an open lookout tower and terrace. There are some upper turrets that close for the night, but the lower parts remain open, regardless of times or weather conditions.
The Buda Castle is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am – 6pm. But you can visit the courtyards outside the opening times as the gates of the courts are not closed.
Yes, please feel free to take photos of yourselves on the Fisherman’s Bastion stairs or at the Buda Castle. You do not need a photo permit for personal use if you take photos in the open air. However, inside the Buda Castle you need to have a photo permit for the exhibitions.
The sun sets in Budapest at various times all year round. Please check the sunset times. You can check sunset hours in this list
http://budapestrivercruise.com/sunset-cruise-budapest

Unfortunately, we couldn’t find information on this fountain in internet.

Thank you very much!
hello!
I would like to ask if the castle area is open on 1st May as it is a national Holiday.
Hello,
yes, the Buda Castle will be open as usual.
Hello, me and my boyfriend, we are visiting Budapest from 29th May till 1st June 2016. I understand that the museums are not open on Monday, but do we need to book necessary a tour with specific time and date or you can explore the castle, museum and the area free of charge. Thanks in advance :)
Dear Donika,
you don’t need to book a tour to be able to enter and discover the Buda Castle. Please note that the entry is not free (unless you have a Budapest Card).
can you visit the castle without a guided tour? do you need to book for just walking round the castle? How much at all does this cost?
Hello Alexa,
the Castle courtyards (the open air courts) are not only open for tourists any day of the year (except for festival days), but are also free to enter. If you wish to take a visit inside the buildings of the Buda Castle, however, you will need to buy a ticket to one of the exhibitions featured in the museum / gallery within the buildings of the Castle (ticket prices €6 – €7 for the various exhibitions).
Budapest Card holders have free entry to almost all buildings in the Buda Castle including the National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum (in the latter you can see some of the old furnishings which remained after WW2). Moreover, you will also get a free Castle District walking tour included in the price of the Budapest Card, which is a 2 hour tour in the Buda Castle district with major sights. Prices for the City Tourism Card (known as the Budapest Card) starting from €17 in 2016. The Card itself offers a range of other discounts, so well worth buying it if you wish to visit the Castle inside and get a tour, plus enjoy further benefits. Purchase of Budapest Card online on this website: http://budapestcards.com/

Has a red Ameritas sticker on back
Has anybody turned in to lost and found.
Thank you
Dawn
Dear Dawn,
we are very sorry to hear that.
I am afraid, there is not any department for lost items in the Buda Castle. If you have lost your mobile in a particular building, museum etc, try to contact them directly.
I am sorry I could not be of more help.
Hi :)
Is there any public parking near the Castle District? If so, do you know approx. parking fee? Or is it better to go there by public transportation? My friend and I will stay at K9 Residence and plan to visit the castle on 27 Sep.
Thanks a lot.
Dear JP, due to the parking restrictions in the Buda Castle, I would definitely recommend you to choose public transportation. You can find several ways to reach the Castle Hill on the following page: https://budacastlebudapest.com/getting-there/

Dear sir/madam,
I’m writing a paper for my last year in highschool, which is about the architecture in Budapest.
I read that the Buda castle was originally built in Gothic-style, and was wondering if there are still any original parts of this style visible.
Hello Sara,
thank you for your comment.
I would suggest you to contact the Budapest History Museon on:
http://www.btm.hu/eng/?q=kapcsolat
Good luck with your essay!

Me and my friends were in Budapest some weeks ago and we visited the Buda castle. In front of it there‘s a souvenir shop. I bought there stamps and threw my postcards into the red box in the shop. There was a young women who said that the cards will arrive within some days. Now passed almost one month and the postcards didn‘t arrive yet. Can you please explain me what happend to my postcards? Are they still in the red box in the souvenir shop? I would be glad if you could help me.
Kind regards
Veronika
Hello Veronika,
we are sorry to hear that.
I am afraid, we will not be able to help you this time as we are only organizing Buda Castle Tours. I would suggest to try to use a search engine and find the shop online, most have phone numbers as well.
I hope you will find the shop and get your postcards soon.

I came across the name of a lieutenant that was an officer in the prison in Cluj and helped saving Jews form deportation to Germany in the summer of 1944.His name is CZikkora who was the prison’s benevolent lieutenant .Can you help me locate his details.
“Czzikkora put on a whole scene so the other guards wouldn’t suspect” (as my relative told his wife).

Hello
My wife can’t walk long distances, and getting on and off the public bus is not easy for her. Is disabled parking available close to the castle or Matthias Church? We have a disabled parking card.
If not, how could she get up there without walking long? With a taxi?
Thank you for your services.
David
Hello David,
since there were some modifications- we have to check it. We will keep you informed.
Hello, I want to ask which sightseeing can be visited around Budai Vár during 26/12-27/12, as it is the Christmas vacation.
Hello Weiyi,
generally speaking, the castle area is open every day of the year.
Some attractions and museums are closed on Mondays (Dec 26), therefore Dec 27 might be a better day to visit.
You can enter Fishermen’s bastion without entry tickets until March 2023, trying the funicular is also recommended just as a guided tour from €11 per person:

Hello,
Is there any way I can find a lost property? A pair of sunglasses that are very sentimental to me.
I would greatly appreciate it if you can respond.
Hello Aiswarya,
we are sorry to hear about your lost sunglasses.
We recommend you contact the places you visited to see if it was handled. There are several museums, cafés and restaurants, unfortunately we are not in contact with all of them. A visit in person could be the most efficient if you are still in Budapest.
I unfortunately am not. I tried calling the number but couldn’t understand any of what was being said as it wasn’t in English. I’m quite sure I had it when I was in the Garden but between climbing up and going for the tour inside the Castle with the chapel I lost it. Do you know who I should contact regarding this?
Thank you for responding.
Thank you for your reply, Aiswarya.
We recommend you contact the tour organiser to see if the guide has found it.
Unfortunately, we could not find a reservation under your name in our system.
Could you please provide me link from where I can buy ticket for Buda Castle, Fisherman Bastion and Matthias Church but not like Guided tour, like free walk for 2. We could visit it at 22.07.23 from 9:00 to 13:00. Thanks!
Hello Mariya,
Thank you for your interest.
We have contacted you via email. Have a lovely time at Buda Castle!
Hello, we are visiting Budapest next month and we would like to book tickets for Buda castle and Matthias church but can’t find anything except guided tours! Is there any way to book separate tickets online?
Hello Anna,
Thank you for your inquiry.
We have contacted you via email!
Enjoy your holiday in Budapest!
Hi is it possible to bring a service dog for special needs into the castle?
Dear Paula,
Thank you for your inquiry.
Yes, you can take your dog to the castle area.
Fisherman’s bastion lower terraces are open all day and night – please note that not all restaurants- museums are dog friendly.
Service dogs such as guide dogs are usually allowed inside the museums.
I would like my 86 year old father to see the renovated Castle district if possible, however, we would need to help him with his wheelchair Please could you confirm which areas are accessible.
Many thanks
Dear Vivienne,
Thank you for contacting us.
The Buda Castle district is accessible with a wheelchair and several institutions can be used too. (This May the complete blue line of the underground, aka the M3 metro line has become accessible too with lifts sliding by the escalators, and there are several buses up to the Castle Hill with low points to roll on).
That said, there is room for improvement. For instance the Royal Palace courts are all cobblestones which is sort of a bumpy ride but doable (with the caveat of being aware of the many cobblestones).
The National Gallery and the History Museum in the Buda Castle building both have accessible entrances and routes within the buildings with special or normal lifts that can be used with a wheelchair.
Have a nice time in Budapest!
How can visitors access Buda Castle, and what are the admission fees?
Dear Visitor,
Thank you for your inquiry.
The castle area can be visited free of charge (You can find restaurants and shops etc). Please note that the Palace building and the museums inside are closed on Mondays. This applies to the History Museum inside the Buda Castle and the National Gallery.
The castle district can be visited every day.
Hope we can welcome you at Buda Castle!

Hello, I would like to know what are the opening hours of the Labyrinth for a self-guide visit (no tour), on May 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 2024.
Also, is it possible to buy tickets for a self-guided visit to the labyrinth in advance?
Thanks
Dear Miguel,
Thank you for your enquiry.
We have contacted you via email.
Enjoy your stay in Budapest!
Is Buda Castle and most of the attractions on Castle Hill open on August 20th? I know the underground walking tour is open on August 20th but what about everything else nearby?
Hello Davidowich,
Thank you for contacting us.
The castle area, unlike the museums inside the castle buildings, can be visited free of charge all year round (You can find restaurants and shops etc. In the Castle District, which is a hilltop residential zone of the city).
On the Aug 20th National holiday there are thousands of visitors each year, it is a popular day for tours and museum visits.
Please let me know if I can help more.
Good afternoon . I would like to know if the castle and the museums will be open for next Monday 19th August 2024, as it is close to the national festivity, and also the prices for a guided tour or audio guide in Spanish, if possible. Is it better to buy on line previously or in the castle itself? Thank you so much.
Hello Maria,
Thank you for contacting us.
Most museums will be open and accept visitors. Spanish tours are available in advance with a private guide, or we recommend the Night Tours (available with Spanish guides). Have a great time at Buda Castle!
What is the program for the 30 Dec – 2Ian?
I’ve got the same doubts of many people. I need to get the official website only the Royal Palace. I’ve understand that the entrance is free but I would like to book the date and time to go into., so it’s necessary for me to get the official website. There will be queues gents in August.
Thank you to help me.
Best regard.

Dear Donika,

Dear Nancy and Martin,

You may even see some festive procedures, Changing of the Guards, etc.

Hj,
Is it possible to book the tours like the Cave tour on the day itself? We’re visiting week of December 11 2023.
Thanks!
Dear Jorel,
Thank you for your comment.
Since cave tours are extremely popular, and normally booked up- we recommend you pre-book at least a week in advance.
