Bus Traffic and Permits to Buda Castle Budapest

Bus Permit from Municipality
The hilltop area can no longer be approached by tourist buses (2023 regulation). The dedicated areas where buses are allowed to park are subject to special permission (and a quite costly one for that matter) which is to be requested in a printed or digital format a minimum of 30 days before the planned visit, according to the municipality managing the Buda Castle area (please find more about it on the link to article, in English).

Bus permits are only issued 24 per day, asked 30 days in advance, and with a minimum of Euro 6 green category to ensure a greener and safer Castle District which is a living residential zone as well as a tourist hot spot.

Alternative Solutions: Bus & Walk or Bus & Funicular or Bus & Public Bus
We would suggest dropping off the group in the vicinity of Buda Castle, as the bus is unlikely to receive a permission to enter the Castle District passing by the Disz ter – Disz square
e.g.

  • Down by the river Danube close to the Castle Bazaar on Aprod utca street, towards Ybl Miklos ter square: from here visitors can use a set of escalators and elevators as well as various stairs and fortifications to approach the Castle in an exciting and scenic way. If you have older visitors they may wish to use the official small Castle Bus, or the public bus (which is often crowded).
  • Nearby the Szechenyi Library on Attila ut – (no buses are to enter Palota ut road though) with an open air car park here where elevators can be used to conveniently reach the inner courtyards in the fastest way possible; or by walking to the Chain Bridge Tunnel, from here, visitors can take the Funicular (HUF 4,000 currently for an adult return ticket), or taking a 15-20 minute walk up the hill, or taking a public bus up the hill (approx. HUF 450 in 2023, more on public tickets on the bkk.hu website).
  • Kindly note that there is no option to park on these streets/ roads / squares, only a temporary quick drop off is available which should not take long
  • Most roads and bridges around the Buda Castle hill are restricted, by weight (max 3.5 tonnes on the Chain Bridge), by height (e.g. 3.5m) or literally blocked to tourist buses with a ‘no buses’ traffic sign (e.g. Hunyadi Janos ut road by the Funicular). It can be a nightmare to navigate in an unknown part of the city with dozens of tourists waiting to get out. Please consult with the guide how to manage the group with the least concern or inconvenience.

As a tourist agency offering Castle tours, we would suggest getting the most up-to-date information directly from the governing body of the Buda Castle (at the contact details above).

We hope all will go well and your group will be happy to keep the city greener and more traffic-friendly without much inconvenience.
