The Buda Castle Cave system is one of the most visited and loved attractions in Budapest, with unique guided walks leading through labyrinth-like tunnels beneath Buda Castle Hill. The caves form a vast underground network, expanded into man-sized passageways during the World Wars, running beneath several kilometres of the Buda Castle District. Since 1987, the area has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. Today, the Castle Cave Tour of the National Park is not merely a place of interest, but one of the highest rated guided experiences in Budapest (you can check availability here).
- 40–90 minute guided cave visit, all year round
- Booking dates released 3–6 weeks before your date
- Professional live guided walking experience
- Certified cave guide (EN)

- Fascinating stories & facts (geo-history “time travel”)

- Private tours available

Castle Cave Tours Under Buda Castle Hill
After descending the stairs into the underground, labyrinth-like passages beneath Buda Castle Hill, you walk through cool tunnels that combine medieval stone corridors with later 20th-century additions. For most adults and teens, the experience is atmospheric rather than frightening, though younger children may need a little extra bravery in darker sections. There are no staged scare effects, smoke, or jump-scares — this is an authentic guided cave experience focused on real history, archaeology, and stories hidden beneath Buda Castle.
The mostly well-lit, snaking cave system feels like an underground city with narrow “streets” running directly beneath the Buda Castle District. That said, some sections are darker and less illuminated, so using your mobile phone’s torch can help if you feel uneasy in dim passages — even though there is no mobile signal approximately 15 metres (49 ft) below ground.

Cave Tours Under the Castle Hill
The National Park cave routes cannot be visited independently, but guided tours run frequently (and can sell out). Tours are generally easy walking: paved routes with lighting, and very little elevation apart from the initial descent and exit.
- Explore centuries-old caves under the Buda Castle District / Royal Palace area
- Guided explanation on history and geology
- See historic cellars and learn how each era used them
- Choose a shorter (about 40–45 min) or longer (about 90 min) format
- Ideal in summer heat and on rainy days
- No caving skills required: paved, illuminated walking route
Practical Notes
The tour is suitable for most travellers, including families and senior visitors. Kindly note that it is not suitable for children under 5, wheelchair users, or visitors who suffer from strong claustrophobic discomfort.
Start times vary day by day (often around 11:30, 14:00, or 16:00).
For exact starting hours of the Castle Cave Tour, please use the booking calendar to select an available date and time.
Private groups (school, corporate or other groups) can contact us for a custom made proposal. Please note that in case of private cave tours the whole group fee is payable along with administrative and organisational fees.
Meeting Points
The meeting point depends on which cave option you book:
- Short tour meeting point: 2 Dárda Street, Budapest 1014 (District I)
- Long tour meeting point: Szentháromság Square, by the Holy Trinity Statue
Important: there is no mobile phone reception roughly 15 metres underground, so please arrive on time and locate your guide before the tour starts.
Refund and Cancellation Policy – Public Cave Tours
Cancellation Policy of Public Cave Tours: typically free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour time (please follow the process shown on your booking confirmation). If you cancel within 24 hours, miss the tour, or arrive late, the tour fee is generally non-refundable. Please note that this cancellation policy does not apply to private cave tours.
Buda Castle Cave System
The Buda Castle Caves and guided routes are managed by the Duna–Ipoly National Park (a protected area preserving special habitats along the River Danube — “Duna” in Hungarian). During the guided walk you see only a small fraction of the larger underground system, which includes a huge number of chambers and interconnecting corridors. Historically, many houses on Castle Hill had cellars linked to this cave network, and wells were vital during sieges.
Kindly note that this experience does not feature vampires or oil lamps.
A Short Note on History – Castle Cave Tours
These underground spaces were used in different eras for storage, shelter, and other practical purposes. In the 20th century, parts of the system were reinforced and adapted for civil defence, and they provided shelter during wartime air raids.
More Caves and Caving in Budapest – In and Beyond the Buda Castle
WW2 Budapest Siege & Cave Tour
The 2-hour walking route explores key Buda Castle locations connected to the WWII siege and includes an underground cave section. Advance booking the WW2 & Castle Cave Walk is recommended, as group sizes are limited and popular dates can fill up. This particular tour focuses on the 2nd World War only, so all aspects of the WW2 Castle Cave Tour revolves around the 1930s and 1940s primarily, e.g. how people survived in the caves, what their everyday lives looked like etc.
Adventure Caving in Nature Parks in Budapest
A more physical caving experience is also available beyond the Buda Castle District, but still in the Buda Castle Hills, in the Pál-völgyi and Mátyás-hegyi cave areas. This Adventure Caving Experience focuses on Budapest’s hydrothermal caves explored with a professional cave guide (a member of the Hungarian Caving Association).
This adventurous caving – including actual climbing and crawling – is typically suitable for ages 12+ and includes more technical navigation in narrower sections (unlike in the Buda Castle caves where regular shoes and clothes are completely fine and visitors use well built corridors and stairs). The Adventure Caving – also managed by the National Park – does not require prior experience, but you should be comfortable with a more active, sporty format and longer physical activity.
If you have any questions, leave a comment or drop us an email. We are happy to advise on the various Castle Cave options, locations, tours, museum visits, or general Labyrinth information, adventure caving or even a Cave Church in Budapest, built on a fascinating system of mineral rich geothermal caves (as the many spa baths testify).

Hello,
Another teacher and I would like to visit the caves with our students and we have some questions. It would be great if you could contact me via my e-mail if possible. Including us teachers we would be 40 people. Is it possible to get a tour for our group or should we split in two groups? Is it better, if we visit without a guide and would that be possible for this many people? Are tours just in English or would there be a possibility for a German speaking guide? Lastly we would be interested in the price for our group.
Thank you very much for your answer.
Dear Michaela,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Buda Castle cave tours.
We have contacted you via email and sent further information regarding your questions about visiting the caves with your group.
I am leading a school group and would like to book a tour of the Castle Cave. Tuesday June 16th. Would this be possible?
Dear Galvin,
Thank you for your Buda Castle Cave Tour inquiry.
We have emailed you with further details.
Hello, is it possible to do the cave tour with a 9 month old baby in a carrierer? He will not run around ! Thanks for the answer
Dear Sarah,
Unfortunately, the Buda Castle Cave Tour is not suitable for a 9-month-old baby, even if carried in a baby carrier.
The cave system involves:
– uneven and sometimes slippery surfaces
– narrow passages
– stairs and low ceilings in certain sections
– cool temperatures and higher humidity
– limited space to move safely with an infant
For safety reasons, small babies are generally not recommended on this programme, regardless of whether they would remain in a carrier.
Good morning I wanted to make a group booking for a school. Can you assist with this please?
Dear Amina,
Thanks for reaching out about your group visit to the Budapest Cave Tour.
We’ve sent you an email with more details.
Enjoy your time in the Castle District!

Hello, I’m looking for the longer cave tour for October 19, but the dates have only been until September 29. I thought as of September 1, today, October would be released but it’s not yet. Do you know when I should set my next reminder to look for availability for October 19? Thank you so much.

Hi, I’ve been looking every day for the labyrinth tour for October and saw they are now posted for Sundays, all except for the Sunday that I’m able to go – October 20. Or October 19? Does that mean that it may get added at some point or should I plan to do something else that day? I’m very disappointed as I really wanted to do this activity. Thanks!
Hello,
I cannot find a guided tour for the caves on the dates I am visiting. I am able to visit the caves without a tour guide? If yes where do I get tickets please?
Dear Sangeeta,
Thank you for your question about the upcoming guided cave tour dates in the Buda Castle.
Cave tour dates are being released gradually, which means that additional dates may be added closer to the date you are planning to visit Budapest. We recommend checking the booking calendar again around 2–7 days before your preferred date, as a guided cave tour may become available, or, if fully booked on a day, with last min cancellations the tickets are re-released, which you may be able to secure for yourself.
The section of the underground cave system where these tours are scheduled are only allowed to be visited with a certified cave guide.
