Budapest History Museum inside the Buda Royal Palace – Dec 31
10:00–14:00
A shorter visiting window than usual, but still a great chance to step into the medieval history of the Royal Palace and enjoy the engaging exhibitions and historical spaces inside the Royal Palace. Guided visits need to be pre-booked.
Matthias Church in Buda Castle District – Dec 31
09:00–17:00
Matthias Church, one of the historical and architectural gems of Buda Castle Budapest, remains open throughout the day, allowing visitors to admire its colourful roof tiles and rich Gothic interior before heading out for the evening celebrations.
Fisherman’s Bastion in Buda Castle District – Dec 31
Open 24 hours
The Fisherman’s Bastion is one of the most popular places to spend New Year’s Eve in Budapest. Its panoramic terraces offer spectacular views over the river and Parliament, especially as the city lights up for the celebrations. While some parts of the terraces (unheated, public) are unticketed at night, other (heated) parts offer a New Year’s Eve Party with High End Dinner and Drinks (tickets can be pre-booked and sell out fast). Please note that noise restrictions are in place to make sure the residents can sleep well. After the midnight cheers please make sure to collect all litter in the litter bins and quietly leave the Bastion.
St. Stephen’s Hall inside the Buda Royal Palace – Dec 31
10:00–13:00
A shorter window, but still a fantastic opportunity to see the beautifully restored royal interiors.
Buda Castle Funicular in Buda Castle District – Dec 31
Operates 07:30–22:00
A scenic way to travel between the riverbank and Castle Hill, with departures every 5–10 minutes. There may be queues during peak hours. You can also decide to get slightly sporty and climb the Buda Castle Hill slopes in approx. 15 minutes (regular fit state) or more leisurely in about 20-25 minutes (less fit visitors). Super sporty guests can even run up to the hilltop through the scenic forest or the residential streets.
1 January – New Year’s Day in Buda Castle
New Year’s Day is usually quieter and wonderfully relaxed in the Buda Castle District, perfect for travellers who enjoy a peaceful winter walk with outstanding views over Budapest.
