Please note that there are currently construction works underway at three locations within the Buda Castle District. One site is directly within the Royal Palace complex, next to the Hungarian National Gallery, where Wing A is being restored to its pre-World War II appearance and developed as a high-end event venue. The terrace of the dining venue is overlooking partly the beautiful historical buildings with the Matthias Fountain and partly the restorative works. Please consider this also part of the favourable pricing.
A second project is located close to the Royal Palace, roughly a three-minute walk away, at the former Archduke Joseph’s Palace, which is also being revitalised as an event venue. The third construction site is the former Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence, approximately a five-minute walk from the Royal Palace courtyards. These works are localised and carefully managed, and they do not dominate the overall visitor experience in the district.

Importantly, the vast majority of the Buda Castle Royal Palace area and the wider Buda Castle District remains free from construction, allowing visitors to comfortably enjoy a rich collection of attractions. Highlights include the old Castle History Museum, the St Stephen’s Hall (winner of the Paris World Exhibition at the turn of the century), the Hungarian National Gallery, the iconic Fisherman’s Bastion, the marvellous Matthias Church, and the historic Buda Castle Funicular 19th century cable car vehicle, alongside the extensive Castle Cave system, including the Castle Cave Wine Cellar.
Visitors can also explore the Alexander Presidential Palace, the Habsburg Gate, Matthias Fountain, the medieval Jewish Synagogue and Prayer House, the Gold Eagle Pharmacy Museum, the Music History Museum housed in a former villa, and the historic Ruszwurm Café & Confectionery dating back to the 18th century. Further points of interest range from the Holy Trinity Statue and the De La Motte Beer Palace to Mary Magdalene Church ruins and the panoramic promenade along Tóth Árpád Sétány, famous for its blossoming cherry trees in spring. Together, these sites, within walking distance from each other, offer a layered journey through Hungarian and European history, from medieval and Ottoman periods through the Habsburg era, the world wars, and even deeper into ancient times, with mammoth traces preserved in the Castle Cave system, now part of the national park network.
