  2. NAFPLIOTOU EIRINI

    Hello!
We are a family of four with a 9-month-old baby in a stroller. I would like to know the easiest way to get to Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion with the least amount of stairs. Is it better to take bus 16 or use the granit lift?
Is it a walkable distance between Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion?

    Thank you very much!

    • Dear Nafpliotou,

Thank you for your message. For families with a stroller, the easiest way to reach Buda Castle is by Bus 16, which takes you directly up to the Castle District without stairs. The Gránit Lift from Clark Ádám Square is also a great, stroller-friendly option with easy access to the top.

Once there, it’s an easy 10–15 minute walk between Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion along mostly flat, cobblestone streets.

  3. Hello! I was wondering what time the escalators to the castle open. I want to get up to the castle for sunrise.

    • Dear Nick,

      Thank you for your message.

The escalators leading up to Buda Castle (located near the Castle Garden Bazaar/Várkert Bazár) typically start operating around 10:00 AM, so unfortunately they won’t be available early in the morning for a sunrise visit.

However, there are alternative ways to reach the Castle before sunrise:

Walking: You can access the Castle District on foot via several pedestrian routes. The Clark Ádám Square side (near the Chain Bridge) offers a steep but scenic walk up the Hunyadi János road or the stairs beside the funicular.
Bus 16: This public bus runs from Deák Ferenc Square up to the Castle District. While it starts early, please check the exact schedule for the day of your visit on the BKK (Budapest public transport) website or app.

We hope you enjoy the sunrise — the view from the Castle is truly stunning at that time of day!
