The Medieval Jewish Prayer House is a unique attraction that shares the history of the Jewish community from the 13th to the 17th century in the town of Buda, later Pest-Buda, today known as Budapest, including the early Middle Ages and the Ottoman Turk occupation.
Nestled in the heart of the Buda Castle District, the Medieval Jewish Prayer House at Táncsics Mihály Street 26 in Budapest District I offers visitors a fascinating journey into the lives of the Jewish community in medieval and early modern Hungary. Discovered during post-war restoration in 1964, the building’s vaulted ceiling revealed Hebrew inscriptions and painted symbols, which were preserved and reconstructed to create this unique exhibition space. The site not only serves as a museum but also as an active place of worship, known today as the Budavári Synagogue (other well known synagogues in the city include the Great Synagogue on Dohany Street, the Rumbach Synagogue and the orthodox Kazinczy Synagogue in the old Jewish District of Budapest city centre).
