Opening Hours of the Royal Palace

Daily Opening Times:

Monday: St Stephen’s Hall and History Museum are open, the rest of the museums inside the Buda Castle Royal Palace are closed. However, the Castle District remains open, as well as attractions like the Buda Castle Cave, the Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker, the Matthias Church, the Funicular, etc.
Tuesday – Sunday:  from 10 am to 6 pm (most Castle Hill attractions)

Please be advised that St. Stephen’s Hall, the recently refurbished wing of the Castle Museum, will undergo routine upkeep from March 16 to March 31, 2025, in preparation for its reopening on April 1. During this period, the rest of the Castle Museum, with its diverse halls and extensive exhibitions, will remain open as usual, welcoming visitors daily from 10 am to 6 pm.

Holiday Schedules

Holidays: depending on the holiday some attractions are closed while others are open in the Buda Castle District. For example, March 15, August 20, October 23 are national holidays but the major museums are open. Easter and Christmas holidays may differ from sight to sight, and Castle tour to tour. You can read more about Budapest Christmas and New Year Budapest on the festive city guides.

As the festivals are some of the best in Budapest, and well worth the entry fee, you will not be disappointed. Oftentimes the festival ticket includes free entrance to the buildings of the Buda Castle.

Opening Hours of the Castle Hill Attractions

Currently the Royal Palace (aka the Buda Castle) is the home of the National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum, therefore, the opening hours of the buildings of the Buda Castle is identical with the opening hours of the Gallery and the Museum (as well as the less known Hungarian National Library, which also often features exhibitions).

  • National Gallery (inside Castle): Tue-Sun 10 am – 6 pm (closed on Mondays, but often open on national holidays)
  • History Museum (inside Castle): Monday – Sunday 10 am – 6 pm
  • St Stephen’s Hall Museum (inside Castle): Monday – Sunday 10 am – 6 pm
  • Buda Castle Cave/ Labyrinth (in Castle District): open all year round, every day (tour subject to availability)
  • Fisherman’s Bastion (in Castle District): open all year round, every day. Walking Tour (value) available every day. From January 2 to May 31. 9:00 am to 7:00 pm// June 1 to September 30 9:00 am to 9:00 pm//
October 1 to December 23: 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.
  • Funicular uphill and downhill the Buda Castle Hill: available all year round (except for odd week maintenance hours on some Mondays). Private Castle Tours with Funicular, Cruise etc. available all year round.
  • Matthias Church: open on most days (except for special occasions like weddings, etc.). Matthias Church Tours subject to availability.
  • Alexander Presidential Palace: Changing of the Guards – hours seasonally changing, normally on display at weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun)

Opening Hours of the Buda Castle District

Buda Castle District Budapest

Similarly to the Royal Palace, the Buda Castle district itself is open all day and night, at least regarding its streets, courts, and even some of its attractions, like the Fisherman’s Bastion, which is the finest lookout tower (a fairy tale tower complex) in the Buda Castle district. The Buda Castle hilltop, which is called the Buda Castle district makes a nice and romantic Budapest attraction for late night or early dawn walks too.

That being said, most of the castle attractions close at 6 or 8 pm, some of the restaurants and bars stay open until around 11 pm or midnight, and then the castle goes calm and quiet. Indeed, the parties and noisy nightlife of the city of Budapest takes place on the Pest side, while the Buda side, including the Buda Castle district, gets quiet and peaceful.

  1. Hello, I would like to know what are the opening hours of the Labyrinth for a self-guide visit (no tour), on May 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 2024.
Also, is it possible to buy tickets for a self-guided visit to the labyrinth in advance?

    Thanks

  2. Hello, is there a way to contact a representative from Buda Castle tours? I purchased my tickets but was never sent an email confirmation.

    • Dear Benton,
      Thank you for contacting us.
I would like to confirm that we have received your booking, and the confirmation email has automatically been sent to your given email address.
I have now forwarded it from our backup email address.
Please check the junk/spam folder of your mailbox too.
Could you please let us know if you have received it?

  3. How can visitors access Buda Castle, and what are the admission fees?

    • Dear Visitor,
      Thank you for your inquiry.
The castle area can be visited free of charge (You can find restaurants and shops etc). Please note that the Palace building and the museums inside are closed on Mondays. This applies to the History Museum inside the Buda Castle and the National Gallery.
The castle district can be visited every day.
Hope we can welcome you at Buda Castle!

  4. I would like my 86 year old father to see the renovated Castle district if possible, however, we would need to help him with his wheelchair Please could you confirm which areas are accessible.
    Many thanks

    • Dear Vivienne,
      Thank you for contacting us.
The Buda Castle district is accessible with a wheelchair and several institutions can be used too. (This May the complete blue line of the underground, aka the M3 metro line has become accessible too with lifts sliding by the escalators, and there are several buses up to the Castle Hill with low points to roll on).
That said, there is room for improvement. For instance the Royal Palace courts are all cobblestones which is sort of a bumpy ride but doable (with the caveat of being aware of the many cobblestones).
The National Gallery and the History Museum in the Buda Castle building both have accessible entrances and routes within the buildings with special or normal lifts that can be used with a wheelchair.
Have a nice time in Budapest!

  5. Hi is it possible to bring a service dog for special needs into the castle?

    • Dear Paula,
      Thank you for your inquiry.
Yes, you can take your dog to the castle area.
Fisherman’s bastion lower terraces are open all day and night – please note that not all restaurants- museums are dog friendly.
Service dogs such as guide dogs are usually allowed inside the museums.

  6. Could you please provide me link from where I can buy ticket for Buda Castle, Fisherman Bastion and Matthias Church but not like Guided tour, like free walk for 2. We could visit it at 22.07.23 from 9:00 to 13:00. Thanks!

    • Hello Mariya,
      Thank you for your interest.
We have contacted you via email. Have a lovely time at Buda Castle!

Hello, we are visiting Budapest next month and we would like to book tickets for Buda castle and Matthias church but can’t find anything except guided tours! Is there any way to book separate tickets online?

  7. Hello,

Is there any way I can find a lost property? A pair of sunglasses that are very sentimental to me.
I would greatly appreciate it if you can respond.

    • Hello Aiswarya,
we are sorry to hear about your lost sunglasses.
We recommend you contact the places you visited to see if it was handled. There are several museums, cafés and restaurants, unfortunately we are not in contact with all of them. A visit in person could be the most efficient if you are still in Budapest.

      • I unfortunately am not. I tried calling the number but couldn’t understand any of what was being said as it wasn’t in English. I’m quite sure I had it when I was in the Garden but between climbing up and going for the tour inside the Castle with the chapel I lost it. Do you know who I should contact regarding this?
        Thank you for responding.

        • Thank you for your reply, Aiswarya.
We recommend you contact the tour organiser to see if the guide has found it.
Unfortunately, we could not find a reservation under your name in our system.

  8. Hello, I want to ask which sightseeing can be visited around Budai Vár during 26/12-27/12, as it is the Christmas vacation.

    • Hello Weiyi,
generally speaking, the castle area is open every day of the year.
Some attractions and museums are closed on Mondays (Dec 26), therefore Dec 27 might be a better day to visit.
You can enter Fishermen’s bastion without entry tickets until March 2023, trying the funicular is also recommended just as a guided tour from €11 per person:

  9. Hello
My wife can’t walk long distances, and getting on and off the public bus is not easy for her. Is disabled parking available close to the castle or Matthias Church? We have a disabled parking card.
If not, how could she get up there without walking long? With a taxi?

    Thank you for your services.
    David

  10. Dear Madam .Sir:
